Promote a safe environment for patients that are deemed at risk for suicide or require supervision for safety reasons.
Provides Sitter services under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
This position serves the following age categories:
pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
For patients presenting to the Behavioral Health Hospital, refer to specific policy related to the Behavioral Health Safety Policy.
Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Suicide Precaution Sitter:
1.
A non-nursing employee of Cone Health in good standing that has attended the Sitter class and completed the current Suicide Policy CBL.
2.
Follow the policy for ?Suicide Precautions for At Risk Patients? (PR-NSG-2011-61) which includes but not limited to:
Obtain report from Nurse and follow the plan of care.
RN and Sitter perform an environmental search as outlined in Policy PRN-NSG-2011-61).
Keep the patient within direct sight of the sitter at all times including bathroom and off department activities.
Document hourly and as needed on the Sitter Documentation Log.
Additionally, RN and/or Sitter perform an environmental search at any opportunity whereby contraband can be introduced into the patient?s room, for example:
after visitors or time outside patient room and document on the Suicide Precautions Documentation Form.
The patient must be closely observed during meals and ensure all tableware and dinnerware used by the patient are returned.
- The sitter will communicate with incoming staff, ie- lab, maintenance, dietary, etc.
that additional precaution is necessary.
Leave any non-essential equipment outside the room and remove any equipment/supplies/ used or unused immediately upon leaving.
Notify the nurse of any noncompliant behaviors (ex:
closing door, opening window, refusal to return tableware, attempting to leave observed area) Provide end of shift report to nurse.

Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, which promote a positive intra- and interdepartmental atmosphere.
Immediately report patient status changes, patient/family concerns or unsafe conditions to the RN.
Relay information/messages to appropriate person(s) in a timely manner.
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of manual and automated communication systems.
Provide input for the plan of care.
Direct questions and problems to appropriate person, recognizing the need to seek assistance when necessary.
Provide emotional support to patients and significant others as needed.
Safety Sitter:
1.
A non-nursing employee of Cone Health that has attended the Sitter class and completed the current Suicide Policy CBL.
Obtain report from Nurse and follow plan of care.
Provide individualized attention to the patient to promote a safe environment.
- Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, which promote a positive intra- and interdepartmental atmosphere.
Immediately report patient status changes, patient/family concerns or unsafe conditions to the RN.
Relay information/messages to appropriate person(s) in a timely manner.
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of manual and automated communication systems.
Direct questions and problems to appropriate person, recognizing the need to seek assistance when necessary.
Provide emotional support to patients and significant others as needed.
Provide end of shift report to nurse.

High School diploma or equivalent.

Six months relevant experience LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
